With all the last minute scrambling to get systems updated for the new DST change tomorrow morning, don't forget to include your trusty sidekick -- your GPSr.

Garmin released software updates earlier this week for their GPSr units that correct for the DST change. Since the units operate in UMT, the world won't end if you don't update the software. However, those FTFs you claim over the next month may be called into question!

I'm not sure about Magellan or other brands. Your best bet is to check with the vendor sites and see if there are any software updates available.

I wonder how many barrels of oil worth of IT resources were wasted because of this DST change? mad.gif I know I can account for atleast one myself.

You'd think they'd be able to make it easy: Leave time alone, and we can change our schedules around time to suit our needs. It's much easier to change a schedule than it is time itself.

Instead they need to go changing time so our natural sleep cycles can be messed up for a week. mad.gif

From the Garmin web site:
QUOTE
Q. My GPS clock is one hour off after the United States Daylight Savings (DST) change. How do I fix this?
A. In accordance with the Energy Policy Act of 2005, in 2007 Daylight Savings for the United States starts Sunday, March 11th. In order to reflect this change in our GPS units, software updates will be released to accommodate the change. As of March 8th, updates have been released for the StreetPilots 2720, 2730, 2820, 7200, 7500, c310, c320, c330, c510, c530, c550, i2, i3, i5, BMW Navigator III, and nüvi 360. To update those devices, please use our WebUpdater software update program. Updates for other units will be released as they are available. Periodically running WebUpdater with your GPS unit connected to the computer will check for updates.
If an update is not available for your unit to reflect the change to the new start of Daylight Savings Time, please refer to the owner's manual to manually change the time.

The Garmin 60CSx instructions are on page 73.

What's a barrel of oil worth of IT resources?

The other stuff? Take a deep breath.

I love Daylight Saving Time!!!!

With the time change we lose an hour, not gain one.

The effect of the leap forward (loosing an hour of sleep) is we get an additional hour of useful sunlight at the end of the day. It should now start getting dark around 7-7:30 instead of 6-6:30.

Of course, if this is such a great idea, why don't we just stay in DST all the time?

Remember Y2K? Everyone was scrambling, worried things were going haywire...

I did nothing. I sat and waited. I yelled at Midnight. Nothing happened.

Last night, I went to bed as normal and when I got up this morning, my cell phone showed the correct (new) time. My comptuer showed the correct (new) time. I had to change the clock on the stove and my PDA. Now in three weeks I might have to change those again. I can never find the clock on my gps, so will that matter? Will that effect how the satellites work?

I can't even get excited about the extra hour of daylight at the end of my day because I start so early that I am getting ripped off on that early sunrise!

Nothing happened at y2k because all of us IT people were scrambling and worrying that things would go haywire, and fixing the things that would. Was all the hype for nothing? Who knows ... as an IT guy I knew my stuff would be OK, but I couldnt tell you what would happen with everything else. The hype probably did a good thing by bringing awareness to the situation, and putting pressure on the IT managers to put resources into making sure nothing would happen.

If your GPS clock is off 1 hour, it will affect things like the 60CSx's going into night mode one hour early.

You will still have a functioning GPS for caching.

There isn't a factory upgrade for the Legend C, so the simple solution was to change the unit to Atlantic Time Zone and turn off Auto DST. It says the same time as the 'puter now.

hmm...
I havn't traveled to different time zones since I got the GPS....... Does it change time to show local time or will it be off by one two or three hours if I go west?

Is it too late to update my GPS? The IT staff here at work said that if you did not update Outlook prior to March 10th you were essentially SOL.

OUTLOOK? What do we have to do with outlook?

Ok, I did a test, I sent myself an email. It seemed the time was right. Is it?

Thanks to all the IT guys for being there for Y2K. I wasn't sure our lives are so contolled by computers that a simple year glitch would kill us. Yes, I'm sure somethings had to be updated, such as billings and so forth....but people were stock piling water! A little crazy...people managed in the days before computers....

Could you?

Kind of funny... After Y2K one of our VIPs mentioned that everyone was freaking out for nothing. I looked at him and said... "I guess you haven't seen many successful projects then?". He apologized and said it was a good point smile.gif

As for DST... I haven't been super involved at work. I did take the time to upgrade most of my personal stuff though. Just an excuse more than anything.

I too thought it was strange, as the time always updates itself when you drive from Eastern to Central time without having to do anything.

We needed to turn the power off and then back on with our cell phones before the time would update.

The issues with Outlook are not necessarily with mail, but with the calendar and meetings/appointments. If you don't use those functions, then you probably won't have any big issues.

Amen to that! The software I worked on at the time was pretty much ready to go. We did make the change to 4 digit year to make our clients happy, but mostly there was no problem. Then again we did make our UK clients happy - you know the ones that have 500 year leases on land undecided.gif .

Just another attempt for Bush to try and control something. If I were him I'd fire the guy that suggested 'time' itself.
