Here's a Cleveland Plain Dealer article I just came across about volksmarching. I've heard of it before and thought it would be a fun alternative to geocaching for a day.

I have been a long time Volksmarcher. I actually started there and picked up geocaching from that. It is fun, and there are a lot of special programs the AVA (American Volksport Association) runs to keep people interested.

Don't believe everyting in the article though. Most participants are retired (60+), not the 40-50 listed in the article.
